What you can expect in therapy

Seeking therapy takes courage. Many people arrive overwhelmed, or having spent years understanding what happened to them yet still feeling stuck. I don’t believe people are broken. I believe their symptoms make sense: understandable adaptations to what we have lived through. Together we work to understand them with both compassion and challenge, gently facing what we may have long avoided, always at a pace you can manage. Whatever brings you here, you will not face it alone.

Therapy that gets to the root

Most people who come to see me have already tried to manage things on their own. What they’re often looking for is something that works at a deeper level — not symptom management, but a genuine understanding of what’s driving the difficulty.

I work predominantly from an Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP) framework, though I draw on CBT, DBT, and ACT where relevant. I create an atmosphere of compassion and focus that allows us to reach the root of the problem, in a non-judgmental and considered way.

1

Initial assessment

Generally a two-hour session to allow both client and therapist to entirely express and process the nature of the problem. Patients using a Mental Health Care Plan can claim for one hour of the initial two-hour session.

2

Subsequent sessions

Regular ongoing appointments of 50-minute duration, organised after the initial session assuming the client is comfortable and wishes to proceed.

3

Online sessions

Online sessions follow the same structure and approach as in-person work. Screen time is limited to one hour to avoid client and therapist fatigue.

Session fees and Medicare rebates

The current Medicare rebate for a session with a Clinical Psychologist is $145.25, provided you have a valid Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP). With a MHCP, you are eligible for up to 10 sessions per calendar year.

Your GP will initially approve 6 sessions and, following a review, may extend this for a further 4 sessions. You are welcome to book with or without a Mental Health Care Plan.

Your first appointment

Your first online appointment will be 60 minutes. In ISTDP, a longer initial session can sometimes be helpful, particularly when meeting face-to-face. However, I find that 60 minutes is generally a more comfortable and manageable length for online therapy (via Zoom). Longer face-to-face (at Robina Therapy) initial consultations can be discussed depending on availability.
